"Thank God"
with prompts inspired by Ally Ang, Seamus Isaac Fey & Anne Carson
The concept of “God” is coming up a lot in my writing. God as an idea or a metaphor presents the the simultaneous craving of freedom & needing to know why I am here and what I should be doing with the time I have. To paraphrase Anne Carson—these are not new questions and I have not found answers—but I still feel compelled to ask them.
I am a libra sun, sagittarius moon & virgo rising. If you know anything about astrology you know that libra & sagittarius are all about justice, beauty & freedom. But virgo demands fierce loyalty, organization & framework. Break the trust (or the heart) of a virgo & if you are lucky, you will be dead to them. If you are less fortunate, you will be the subject of their rage (which can be infinite). My desire for freedom & justice has come into terrific conflict with my need for allegiance & ways of framing the world. As I get older, this seems to be a result of needing the world to be manageable. Navigable.
The poems we will read today explore concepts of “God,” origin, freedom & navigating the unknown.
