This week, I’ve been considering the origin story as a way into poetry. I’ve been deep in research about my current manuscript-in-progress—this week, it includes reading and excerpting the translation of and commentary on Budoji, a lesser-known, sometimes controversial, Korean origin story written by Park Jesang (363-419 CE) during the Silla dynasty. It includes the earliest known origin tales/beliefs of Koreans from 2333 BCE, many of which are rooted in shamanism.

Budoji: A Tale of the Divine City of Ancient Korea with an Overview of Korean Shamanism

I highly suggest buying & reading Budoji if you are interested in Korean shamanism and/or origin stories. Seo Choi also offers other services and products which you may check out HERE (disclaimer: I have not used any of these services; just sharing for information!).

I’ve included two origin story poems by writers that I love below:

Origin Story: The Father by Diamond Forde

Sonnet for My New Name by Seamus Fey

So, “where are you from?” How did you begin?
